Fred Rook Award for Jean & Don

Report Date 21/06/14

This award was presented by Fred Rook who was a Scout on Hayling and decided in 1987 that he would like to introduce an award for any member of the Group who shows their commitment to community service which has always been a key aspect of Scouting.

Fred who has recently become a Chelsea Pensioner was unable to join us this year, but sent his best wishes to the Group and to the success of our Birthday Camp..

Helping others can come in many forms from involvement in local organisation or support group to giving up your personal time to those less fortunate. This comes from what is basically a personal attitude to life.

Jean and Don Bates have only been on the Island for 5 years, but in that time have become very involved members of our Group Active Support Unit, always helping with our events and activities, Jean also helps with Beavers ans is a member of the Hayling Guiding Trefoil Guild. They are both active members in their Church and travel to Gambia to help those less fortunate.

This is what community service is all about and why Jean & Don are such worhy recipients of this award

Well done Jean and Don, and apologies that I should have faced the other way when presenting the award so the photograph would have shown your faces - full of surprise!!
