Oliver receives the David Baker Award

Report Date 28/05/10

The "David Baker Award" was first presented in 1996 and is made to a uniformed member of the Hayling Scouts who best demonstrates their commitment to our Scout Law's and Promise. The trophy was presented to the Group by Jane and Tony Baker in commemoration of their son David who had shown great spirit and determination over many years despite suffering from Cystic Fibrosis.

Normally, Jane & Tony (who is still an active leader with the Explorer Unit) make the presentation although this year Tony was in flight from Australia and Jane presented the trophy to Oliver Tonkin who has recently moved into the Explorer section.

Oliver joined Scouting at the age of 6 and has gained the top award in the Beaver, Cub and Scout sections. Throughout this time he has developed a number of skills. demonstrated all round commitment and has always been willing to try anything new.

His nomination from the Leaders is the result of his natural ability to help those younger than himself clearly demonstrated when helping with Saturn Cubs, his involvement in every opportunity and for a very mature outlook to all he does. For example he recently helped at an Adult training session by teaching new leaders games and how to make them work best

Well done Ollie
