GSL's Update

Top Award for Elliot and Elliot
Congratulations to Elliot Wells and Elliot Lewis of Apsen Beaver colony on receiving their Chief Scout's Bronze Awards, the top award of the Beaver section. The awards were presented by Nigel Valette the District Commissioner for Havant.

Cheque Presentation
Hayling Scouts received a cheque from Andrew Griffin of the Hayling Islander for £404 from the Islander 2008 Calendar sales. The photograph shows Andrew with George and Harry Ewens of Saturn Cubs. We would like to thank the Islander team for their generous donation and those Islanders who purchased a Calendar.

Nigel Valette and Ian Hawke recognised in Scouting's St George's Day Awards
Each year Scouting recognises members of the association in their St George's Day Awards and this year Nigel and Ian both received the "Silver Wolf", the highest award in Scouting and the personal gift of the Chief Scout. Both Nigel and Ian were totally surprised to be recognised in this way.

Nigel, who lives on the Island was formerly a Cub Scout Leader on Hayling and is currently the District Commissioner for Havant Scouting

The photograph shows Nigel and Ian at Windsor Castle during the St George's Day Parade.

Nigel was presented with his award in April and Ian will receive his at the Awards and Presentations evening in June.

100 Club Results
Congratulations to Wendy Saunders, Chris Thomas and Tracy Knight who each won £25 in our April 100 Club Draw.

St George's Day Service.
Over 100 members of the Group joined others from Havant at the annual St George's Day Service. I was panicking a bit when having filled the Coach we still had over 50 people waiting for transport, but we all made it!

Camps and Sleepovers
Since our last edition of "The Woggle", 25 Cubs from Jupiter Pack spent a weekend in camp at Lyons Copse, 25 Cubs from Saturn Pack held a sleepover including working on their Cyclist and Astronomer badges. The older Scouts from Eagle Troop spent a Service weekend, working around the HQ and 2 weeks later the troop held a camp on Hayling.

Expedition
Five Explorers completed a two day expedition on the South Downs Way as part of their Chief Scout's Platinum D of E Bronze Awards. Kathryn Lincoln, Alastair Harris, Zack Allgood, Chris Reeve and Sam Whiteland-Smith planned and carried out their expedition camping on the Downs overnight.

Lions Walk
Well done and thanks to those who joined in the "Round Langstone" walk organised by the Lions Club. The Beavers and Cubs walked part of the Billy Line whilst our Scouts and Explorers completed the full 15 miles with Trek Cart in tow.

Awards & Presentations
Don't forget our Annual Awards evening on Wednesday 11th June starting at 19:15. This year we have some special presentations being made, a talk from Jordan Reed and Alastair Harris on their participation in the World Jamboree, a short video and other photo displays of some of our Centenary activities. The meeting ends by 21:00 with tea and biscuits.

Family Fun Day
Saturday 28th June
The team are completing their plans for what looks like a great day of fun. Have you booked your place yet?. You can do this online or via the form sent out recently. For parents please see separate letter or our Web Site for some clarification over the costs for this day.

Hayling Carnival
Although our Scouts are at camp, our Beavers and Cubs will be joining in with the Hayling Carnival on Saturday August 2nd. Our objective is a simple float with as many taking part as possible. If you would like to help us with our preparations and/or on the day then please speak to your leader.

Scarecrow Festival
At a recent meeting we decided that we would join in with this years Scarecrow festival. Our current plan is to let our Scarecrow watch the world go by from the HQ.

Book Sale
Thank you to everyone who helped with the preparations and sorting for our Book Sale. As a result of your efforts and those of the sales teams we have raised over £670 towards our Group Funds.

Our Next Challenge
We have decided to upgrade our photocopying capabilities. Although the use of email and our website has significantly reduced the quantity of paper copies of letters we produce, we are seeing an increase in demand for colour printing.

The visual impact of colour on posters and other promotional material is important to us presenting a professional image when competing for the limited resources of time and money on Hayling Island.

With this new equipment we will be able to produce our Annual Reports in colour, to produce posters similar to that used for the recent Book Sale and make the best use of the latest digital photography technology.

There will also be a significant saving on the cost of ink jet cartidges that are the current means of producing colour leaflets.

We are now launching a project to raise £3000.
